چکیده

Terrestrial close range digital photogrammetric methods were used to obtain three-dimensional data on erosion gullies associated with waste rock dumps at Newmont Australia’s Jundee gold mining operations. Digital stereo pairs of photographs were taken at each site and three-dimensional images produced using the CSIRO software package SIRO3D. Difficulties associated with producing accurate three-dimensional images included: aspect; complex gully morphology; and excessive vegetation in and around gullies. Data from each image were then imported into the GIS program ArcView, where gully volumes were calculated and gully morphology (profile shape and length) was documented. The gully data were then used to develop parameters for the landform evolution model SIBERIA. The three main parameters of the model were adjusted until the simulated gullies were of similar morphology and volume to those measured in the field. The model was then used to predict the evolution of the waste rock dumps through periods of up to several hundred years using the derived parameters. The SIBERIA parameters derived were comparable with parameters developed during previous erosion studies performed at the site. Predicted long-term erosion rates were comparable with current estimated erosion rates. Additional

A field investigation of application of digital terrestrial photogrammetry to characterize geometric properties of discontinuities in open-pit slopes

In order to analyze the slope stability in open-pit mines, the structural parameters of rock mass such as persistence and spatial orientation of discontinuities are characterized through field surveys, which involve spending high costs and times as well as posing high risks of rock toppling and rock fall. In the present work, a new application of terrestrial digital photogrammetry is introduced...

Rock mass structural characterization via short-range digital photogrammetry

Because of the important role of rock mass structural properties on its mechanical behavior, determining the qualitative and quantitative properties of has been a subject of intense research. In this regard, numerous techniques such as scanline surveying, cell mapping, and geologic structure mapping have been proposed. However, applying such field surveying techniques for rock mass properties i...

Tracking the Fate of Metals in Mining Waste Rock Using M etal Stable Isotopes

The characterization of metal release and attenuation in mining waste rock drainage has traditionally relied upon an array of mineralogical and geochemical techniques. Recent advances in analytical instrumentation now allow robust measurements of minute variations in the isotopic composition of metals in environmental samples, which have become a powerful new tracer of their fate. Here we provi...

Metal extraction competence of plants on waste dumps of magnesite mine, Salem District, South India

An ex-situ experiment to assess the metal extractive potential of fourteen agriculture plants (Vigna unguiculata, Gossypium hirsutum, Jatropha curcas, etc.) was conducted on Magnesite mines which had above permissible levels of Cadmium and Lead. There was no much difference in the total chlorophyll a and b, carbohydrate and protein contents in the plants grown in the mining soil and adjacent co...
